NASDAQ OMX Commodities has gained a modern, stable platform that makes it easier to add and remove functions in the integration platform around the trading and clearing system.
”With our new integration platform around the trading and clearing system, we have gained a more flexible IT system. We have full control, and our services are always available,” says Rein-Amund Schultz, Head of IT development at NASDAQ OMX Commodities in Norway. He praises Redpill Linpro, who provided the solution.
NASDAQ OMX Commodities operates the largest exchange for energy trading in the world, with 370 members in 20 countries. This requires a solid, stable IT platform.
The company’s old IT platform came into existence over a ten-year period. It had become complex with many subsystems that did not communicate with each other. Implementing changes was time-consuming.
Increased competition meant that the company needed to be able to get new services and functions up and running more quickly. NASDAQ OMX Commodities conducted a review of its IT strategy. A new platform based on service-oriented architecture (SOA) was a central element of this review. ”The choice was made for an SOA solution based on free software, with Redpill Linpro as the supplier of the platform from JBoss. We looked at other alternatives, but decided that free software was the best option for us,” says Schultz.
”Access to the source code gives us great confidence. If a fault arises, we do not need to go through a time-consuming support system. We can find the fault, sort it out and move on. That’s a huge advantage.”
Redpill Linpro has implemented the solution and migrated the services and systems to the new platform. There was great tension and excitement in the IT department at NASDAQ OMX Commodities when the solution went ”live” on 20 April 2009. The upgrading of the integration platform was carried out at the same time as the upgrade to the trading and clearing platform. All operations were to transfer to new systems at the same time. Schultz is well satisfied with the process.
”We were up and running from day one. There have certainly been a few challenges on the way. We encountered some unforeseen problems, but Redpill Linpro has been solid and reliable. They have been there one hundred percent and solved the challenges,” explains Schultz.
Redpill Linpro has completed the implementation and migration work. A few internal developers have worked on the SOA platform.
”We have used Redpill Linpro to the full. They have been excellent. They know us, and we have a good relationship with them. You need to cultivate a good relationship. We want to continue to work with them,” says Schultz.
An excellent platform
NASDAQ OMX Commodities now has an integration platform capable of major, rapid adjustment. The SOA solution ensures good information flow, new services can be tested more quickly and they can be up and running faster. The flow of data is simpler, it is easy to add or remove services, and the system can be adapted to new needs within the organisation more quickly,” explains Schultz.
”We are a little lighter on our feet now. We have full control. If we change the integration platform, we know how the rest of the system will be affected. It reduces the number of unforeseen events and downtime, which is important for us as an exchange,” says Schultz.
”We have gained an excellent platform that looks after several of our central services around the trading and clearing platform. This guarantees the necessary information flow and ensures that up-to-date data is available to our public,” he concludes.
