In the modern digital business environment, success depends less on which IT systems, vendor or data source you rely on, and much more on how you are able to connect them. To enable digital services and digital innovation you need data connectivity and data discovery.

This requires top notch system integration capabilities for you to be able to meet demands and keep ahead of your competition.

Realize that your core business is digital

Today many organizations are struggling with the digital transformation, and maybe you are too? As more and more business value is being represented by digital assets it becomes critical to be excellent at connecting and using data in service and product delivery, regardless of where you, up to this point, have had your core business.

Gone are the days where you could keep data and digital services behind closed doors to be used as support for your delivery of your "real" core business. Today either digital services already are your core business or it will very shortly become your lost business and someone else's core business.

You need to have access to the right data at the right time regardless of whether the data is internal or external or intended for your business, or a third party. If you aren't providing your data and profiting from it someone else is or soon will be.

And there you have the problem.

Slaying the silo

It is essential that you either make your core business into an IT driven business or come up with an excellent way to break through silos in order for the digital enterprise to excel. To do that, you need a new holistic cross-cutting, and silo slaying IT integration strategy.

For instance traditional, point-to-point integration architectures simply can’t keep up with the speed and volume of integrations a company will need to digitally transform. Modern IT integration requires speed, flexibility, security, and the ability to scale.

The barrier to accessing data is oftentimes not due to a lack of skills or resources, but the lack of a coherent IT integration strategy to connect the dots to enable data discovery and data (re)use.

A point-to-point integration architecture with backend systems is time-consuming and very costly, and as budgets usually are kept within silos the integrations are too. This works against discovery and cross silo reuse and becomes too ineffective to keep pace with the explosion of data needs as core business becomes digital.

A point-to-point based IT integration strategy does not scale, so what do we do when we no longer are talking about hundreds, but thousands of applications – many of which will be beyond the IT department’s control. Rather, organizations need to think of their business applications, data sources, devices and systems as one complete whole, and not just a list of separate, disconnected projects.
