Amedia is a leading news publishing company in Norway with 80 local newspapers and 2.2 million daily readers. Amedia Development creates new content services for the online newspapers and readers, and supports all parts of the publishing company with their digital transformation.
Amedia Development's operational cooperation with Redpill Linpro dates back to 1999. Redpill Linpro has since then ensured Amedia’s newspapers online presence and kept related support services up and running in accordance to its customers’ needs and wishes. Redpill Linpro is responsible for the primary part of Amedia Development's IT infrastructure and is a key sparring partner when it comes to ongoing development and adaptation of new products.
For Amedia, outsourcing their operations environment to Redpill Linpro made sense both financially and professionally. This led Amedia Development focus on developing new services and driving innovation through adopting new software and methods.
The Amedia architecture supports the customers demand for high availability combined with handling rapid changes in both content and architecture. The solution is implemented as a redundant cluster over three distinct data centres using anycast to dynamically direct traffic to the closest available data center.
The setup is highly automated, running a combination of Varnish Cache and a highly redundant Kubernetes cluster, orchestrating 150+ microservice applications, consisting of 750+ containers. Persistent storage is provided by multiple redundant MySQL Galera clusters spanning all three data centers. In addition a fleet of multisite Escenic is deployed for content-management of the newspapers.
The solution is running within Redpill Linpro Nordic Cloud and consists of a combination of high-performance hypervisors as well as our “bring your own hardware” option.
DevOps and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE)
In keeping up with the continuous demand for improved services in the online news industry, Amedia Development has a strong culture for innovation and a high rate of change, continuously deploying to production. To keep ahead in the market, it is crucial for Amedia Development to be able to experiment with bleeding edge software in order to increase the time to market for their products and services.
Redpill Linpro's reliability engineers work in close cooperation with Amedia Development, based on SRE principles. Service Level Indicators (SLI) are used to measure the Service Level Objectives (SLO) and the resulting Error Budget is used to promote experimentation and review operational dependencies. The primary goal is to give the developers the tools and environment they need to be able to effectively deploy as frequently as they need.
Driving Open Source projects
Both Redpill Linpro and Amedia Development are committed to Open Source code. Amedia Development has made significant contributions to the development of Varnish, a web accelerator initially developed by Redpill Linpro.
For Amedia Development, spending time and effort on developing Open Source software has proven a wise investment, bringing advantages in terms of both finances and flexibility.
